My path to patient advocacy didn't begin with a job title or certification. It began at the bedside.

My nursing career has taken me through a variety of clinical settings, yet no matter the environment, I’ve always found myself drawn to the same part of the work. The common thread has been helping people understand what was happening and how to choose what came next.

The moments that stayed with me most weren’t the successful procedures or professional recognition. They were often the quieter, smaller moments—holding a patient’s hand while explaining a new diagnosis, sitting with a family to help clarify their treatment choices, or simply taking the extra time to make complicated medical information easier to understand.

Those moments taught me that sometimes the most meaningful thing you can give someone in healthcare is the time and information they need to understand their situation clearly, and the patience and support to make the best decisions they can for themselves.

Advocating for my patients was always part of being a nurse. What I didn't know then was that patient advocacy also existed as a profession of its own, and that the part of nursing I had always been most drawn to could become the focus of my work.
